Objects made by hand, inspired from the Indigenous past
The materials, designs and meanings of images impressed upon objects, or sacred places like caves, cliffs, or a rocky shore in the hemisphere of the indigenous cultures holds connection for me. How were these images made, and what were the reasons for making them, especially those of ceremonial use? These questions fill me with intrigue and wonder.
I research a lot and often find the scientific deconstruction of what, why, and how, has some value, but often lacks human and spiritual reality. I find research is reported through a lens void of spirituality and therefore limited.
I open up to the Indigenous spirit within myself, that has lived as a cave painter, a medicine woman, a warrior and then go by instinct for interpretations of these pieces.
I 'replicate' the design, and insight pours into my senses during the process. Feelings come through my body. I may be connecting with the original artist, or perhaps with my own work from another time. Whatever I'm connecting to, its profound and a genuine pleasure to experience!
I respect the cultures I create from, but the edges that once divided us have grown gossamer thin.
Once I was held back by appropriation, but no longer. As a spiritual being, we are all one. We don't own things, we share them. We don't sell things, we trade energy.
